Weekend Weather Woes... Did Somebody Say Snow???

Active jet stream winds will bring us some rather wet and perhaps wintry conditions this weekend as a sharp upper trough draws in some unseasonably cold air by Sunday.

There are two systems that will be impacting the weather across Western New York and much of the region.  The first one arrives on Friday the initial upper low arrives out of the southwest helping to "phase" with the northern branch of the jet that will eventually bring the cold on Sunday.

In the meantime, Friday is looking wetter with the potential of some pretty heavy rainfall.  Rain looks to arrive Friday morning and will be with us for much of the day making for a soggy end to the workweek.

Models today have increased the intensity, and therefore impact of the low on Friday with a good soaking expected for most areas on the order of three-quarters of an inch to locally better than an inch of rainfall going into the weekend with heavier totals into Central New York.

We'll get a break on Saturday with breezy and cool conditions before a "clipper style" low dives in behind it on Sunday.  Yesterday the GFS was quick to point this feature out with the Euro and Candian holding out on this idea.  That changed today with both models coming onboard with this idea increasing confidence that a cold rain will be likely on Sunday and the potential exists for a period of some wet snowfall for parst of the the area.

While accumulations are not out of the question, I mean historically it does happen, look no further than April 28th of last year, temps will certainly be a limiting factor should this scenario pan out with warming ground temps and air temps that will be marginal at best with high temps running several degrees above freezing still... with the Euro being the coldest with upper 30's on Sunday.

We'll be watching the trends closely over the next couple of days, in themeantime, if you are looking for some outdoor activity this weekend, Saturday will be your day.

Temps remain well below the climatological average throught much of next week.
