Active jet stream pattern brings plenty of rain this week...

There are growing pains associated with the change of seasons. When the cold air of winter finally retreats and the warmth begins to return from hibernation, that's when you typically see more active upper level patterns developing.  The jet stream, that river of air aloft, reponsible for developing and transporting storm systems across the US and the world for that matter will be very busy with deep undulating waves of both high and low pressure.  These upper lows, known as troughs in the jet stream winds will be a dominant presence this week with a series of storm systems that looks to bring us warming with time, but also plenty of wet weather.

Following the round of strong storms across the area Sunday night, this sharp upper low will keep temps on the cold side on Monday as a strong westerly breeze develops with more showers that could actually mix with a little snow by late in the day especially into the the higher terrain south into the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier.

We'll get a break on Tuesday with moderating temps before an upper disturbance arrive with increased clouds and a rain chance on Wednesday.  That rain chance remains with us a warmth surges into Western New York on Thursday with temps pushing the 70 degree mark.  Finally a stronger cold front appears poised to roll through the region on Friday with not just rains, but also thunderstorms possible.

A colder, but still unsettled pattern looks to continue through next weekend.

Rainfall totals for for the week according to the European Weather Model is showing widespread 1.5 to 3.0 inch rainfall amounts across much of the Empire State.

The Weather Prediction Center agrees with this assessment showing rainfall on the order of 2.0 to 2.5 inches generally for Western New York.

While that is quite a bit of rain, it should be spread out over several days so flooding is not anticpated at this time.

We'll be watching though just in case.
