Jeremy Kappell

Meet Jeremy Kappell

I am a family man, first and foremost a father of two amazing teenagers. Family time is my favorite and I count that as the highest honor.  As a Christian, I am a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. I was born and raised a Hoosier and am a proud Purdue Graduate. Boiler up!  As a former TV weather guy, I now work as an independent journalist and meteorologist.

I've been a broadcast meteorologist since 2000 and have had the pleasure of serving in many states across our great country like Texas, Kansas, Mississippi, Indiana, Kentucky and New York. During my career I've served as morning, weekend and chief meteorologist for more than a half dozen television stations across the Eastern United States.

In 2015, I earned an EMMY award for my work in the 5-part weather documentary entitled, "The Super Outbreak".  This covered the 40th Anniversary of the historic tornado outbreak that occurred on April 3, 1974.  Both my parents and grandparents barely escaped with their lives as a monster EF-5 destroyed their homes on that tragic day.  It was this event that changed the future of my family and ultimately shaped my career as a meteorologist and severe storm expert.  Then in April 2016, I earned BEST WEATHER ANCHOR by the Kentucky Associated Press and was awarded a second EMMY in 2017 for my documentary on the deadly Henryville Tornado from March 2, 2012.

In 2019, while working in Rochester New York, my life and career took a dramatic left turn when I stumbled over the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's name during a LIVE on-air broadcast. The following weeks and months led to a very public and highly politicized chain of events that left my family in constant turmoil and grief.  After a multi-year legal battle and with much prayer and counseling, I made the difficult decision to end my 20-year career in broadcast television. This would allow me to pursue new opportunities and to focus on family while returning home to Southern Indiana.

I now spend my time running a small business and producing independent media that includes a weather podcast, called "WxLIVE".  In 2022, I released an autobiography, focusing on my career, political views and faith, titled "The Calm During The Storm: Persevering through Chaos and Fear with Unwavering Faith".  In April of 2024, I produced my first full-length, independent weather documentary, "The Super Outbreak: The Day Weather Changed Forever", chronicling the 50th anniversary of the historical April 3, 1974 event.
